Serena is a licensed Landscape Architect in California and Hawaii, with over 11 years in the practice.

McHale Landscape Design, one of the region’s most award-winning, longstanding residential landscape architecture and design-build firms, celebrates its 40th anniversary this month. Founders Kevin and Steve McHale reflect on four decades of the family business and look ahead to the future of the firm and its next generation of leaders. Ecocentrix Landscape Architecture enjoys multidisciplinary collaborations with the design industry’s top talent, including respected architects, interior designers and developers. Whether working with our valued clients or trade professionals, we pride ourselves on a holistic approach to feasibility, design and development. His skills uniquely reflect the diversity of his experience and his ability to provide expertise in design, public relations, technical problem solving, scheduling and budgeting issues. We do believe we will return to more of a “normal” growth pattern over the next three to five years. There is still a lot of opportunity out there but everyone’s going to have to look a little bit harder. Defined as striking the perfect balance between built and natural worlds, the multi-disciplinary practice is the place in which art and science combine.
Keith Bowman, president of horticultural services and business development at McHale Landscape Design, gives his take on the current state of the green industry. From holding a significant amount of inventory at a private nursery to internal masonry and carpentry crews to five locations—the firm’s in-house offerings set McHale apart. The McHale brothers’ passion for the landscape industry began while mowing lawns when they were 12 years old. Learning the value of hard work and financial accountability from their parents, and while still attending college at West Virginia University, Kevin and Steve began the business in 1981. The two leveraged a remote model before it was common—Steve worked on the designs from school while Kevin launched and ran the business out of his home. From leading product development and operations at Sixpenny Home to her tenure as EVP Operations at the Yoga Center of Minneapolis, she consistently demonstrated her ability to drive growth and efficiency.
She has worked on a variety of projects ranging from estate and multi-family residential, civic, educational, retail and nursery development. She loves to travel and is always interested to see how different regions and cultures design and use their outdoor spaces. Keith Bowman, president of horticultural services and business development at McHale Landscape Design, provides his thoughts on the current state of the green industry. Our team’s exemplary craftsmanship has enriched numerous landscapes throughout Maryland, Virginia, and the greater Washington, D.C. Area, and our signature design-build process has been showcased in diverse properties from farms to estates to private homes and beyond.
Twenty people have been employed for 20 years or more and an additional 25 have been with McHale for 15 years or more. Roderick Wyllie, FASLA, is an award-winning landscape architect and a founding partner of Surfacedesign, Inc. His horticultural knowledge and passion for material authenticity reinforce craftsmanship and attention to detail into each project at Surfacedesign.
Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to found Clutch Businesses, focusing on building automated, self-sustaining e-commerce businesses for women entrepreneurs. Angie Viehman brings a unique and vibrant energy to the team, combining her extensive experience in operations and e-commerce with a deep passion for empowering women entrepreneurs. Working for both a landscape contractor and tree company gave her a strong appreciation for the hard working contractors and maintenance workers who implement the landscape designs. With that, she has focused attention on providing clear details and thinking through the building process in all her designs. Steve and Kevin are laser-focused on hiring and retaining some of the most talented, creative people in the industry.
Serena received her Bachelors of Agricultural Science in Landscape Architecture from Colorado State University. In that time, she spent a year in AmeriCorps volunteering in Colorado, Dallas, and Kansas City. Landscape Architecture as a career path was first presented when she collaborated on the design and install of a community garden, trail system and deck at an Education Center while in the program. Before beginning his professional career, John embarked on an extensive overseas study program traveling throughout China and Southeast Asia. Through both his individual study and collaboration with professional offices and universities, he sought to explore, in depth, the social and cultural impacts on architecture, urban planning and the natural environment.
